Sporting spirit By George Orwell Summary

In The Sporting Spirit by George Orwell we have the theme of pride, nationalism, jealousy, hatred and passion. Taken from his Shooting an Elephant collection the reader realises after reading the essay that Orwell may be exploring the theme of pride and nationalism. Orwell argues that the sport played by either side may not necessarily be of the utmost importance. Be it football, boxing or cricket. The driving factor is not to be beaten by another nationality as by doing so one may lose face. It is also possible that Orwell is suggesting that sport is taken far too seriously. Particularly in urban areas where individuals may not have an outlet for their energies. The fact that the Arsenal team is mentioned by the Russians as being an all-England team is also interesting as it highlights for the reader the fact that Arsenal do not wish to be beaten by a foreign team. Hence using the best player’s available to them from other teams. Likewise it is as though the element of fun has been taken out of playing sport with those who attend sporting events trying their best to disrupt the opposition.

Orwell also argues that there is an element of savagery among those who attend sporting events. Something which some critics might suggest is an example of excessive pride for one’s own team. The Olympic Games held in Germany in 1936 are also placed under a spotlight by Orwell. With many historians looking upon the Games as being a propaganda event for Hitler and Nazism in general. Again the fun that one may have playing football or any other sport on the local green is no longer. Orwell also suggests that sport has become a big business and as such the owners of teams dictate what happens. Again no longer is sport seen as being a fun thing to participate in. Those who play football for example are mere pawns of the owners of the football club. As too are the fans who pay the ticket price to watch the game. Orwell’s introduction of boxing as an example to back up his point is also significant as he views those who box against someone of a different colour as being purveyors of white supremacy. When a white boxer wins. It proves in their eyes that the white race is far superior to the black race. Boxing in particular appears to bring out jealousy and hatred among those who watch it.

Orwell also disagrees with women attending boxing matches on the grounds that they get too emotional. Though some readers might suggest that this is true it is more likely that a female spectator is allowing herself to be passionate about the sport she is viewing. Orwell’s theory that women are too emotional doesn’t really have any logic behind it and in today’s terms may be viewed upon as sexist. Though this may not have been Orwell’s intention and he was only drawing from personal experience during his time in the army. Overall Orwell does not shine a flattering light on the spirit of sport. He sees no positives for it once it becomes a divide between different towns, cities or countries. If anything Orwell compares the participation in sport as being similar to war without the weapons. Such is the actions of both the participants and those who attend the sporting events. In Orwell’s eyes there is no such thing as friendly rivalry. The business of sport is far more serious and dangerous.

It may also be a case that Orwell is suggesting that individuals have misplaced loyalty or pride to their teams or favourite sportsmen. They are after all only playing a game. Even if that game is taken very seriously by all concerned. In Orwell’s world it is better to put the fun back in sport and not have the emotional involvement that comes at sporting events. To not be concerned about who should win or who should lose or what the meaning of winning might be for those at the event. However it is human nature to idolize a football team, a boxer or a cricket team. One wants their team or sporting hero to win at all costs. Which may be the problem. By having Arsenal play an all-England team they are in many ways cheating in order to prove themselves better than they really are. The motivation being to not lose face to a foreign team as there is a matter of national pride at stake. In some people’s eyes it is better to cheat and win than lose with dignity. People don’t remember who came second or who lost. In life it is only the winners who are remembered and who have bragging rights for the time being.

SONNET 106 SUMMARY BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

Analysis of Sonnet 106

Lines 1-4

When in the chronicle of wasted time

I see descriptions of the fairest wights

And beauty making beautiful old rhyme

In praise of ladies dead and lovely knights,

The four lines talk about chronicles of the past. The lyrical voice mentions that he/she reads old texts (“When in the chronicle of wasted time”) and encounters great descriptions “of the fairest wights”. Notice that “wight” is an old term that refers to “people”. Those depictions that the lyrical voice reads are of alluring people (“And beauty making beautiful old rhyme”), such as dead women and knights (“In praise of ladies dead and lovely knights”). These lines set the scene of the sonnet and serve as an introduction for the following quatrains.

Lines 5-8

Then in the blazon of sweet beauty’s best,

Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow,

I see their รกntique pen would have expressed

Ev’n such a beauty as you master now.

The next set of lines relates the beauty of the past to the unknown young man. The lyrical voice realizes that these astounding descriptions (“The in the blazon of sweet beauty’s best/Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow”) can be correlated with the beauty of the young man and the possibility to depict his beauty (“I see their รกntique pen would have expressed/Ev’n such a beauty as you master now”).

These lines express the similarity between the young man’s beauty and the beauty found in antiquity. The lyrical voice looks back in time in order to realize that the young man’s beauty could be also found in past stories, as it is eternal and not ephemeral.

Lines 9-12

So all their praises are but prophecies

Of this our time, all you prefiguring,

And for they looked but with divining eyes,

They had not skill enough your worth to sing.

Lines 9 to 12 furthers on the idea of the previous one. The lyrical voice says that those old chronicles are connected to the young man, as they “are but prophecies/ Of this our time, all you prefiguring”. The beauty of this unknown young man surpasses time and place. Nevertheless, the lyrical voice refers to the incapability of expressing this beauty in writing: “And for they looked but with divining eyes,/They had not skill enough your worth to sing”. The beauty of this young man is greatly idealized, as the lyrical voice suggests that these great writers of the past weren’t able to refer to that particular beauty (even though they described other great characters).

Lines 13-14

For we which now behold these present days,

Have eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise.

The final couplet of Sonnet 106 furthers on the idea of the previous lines. The past is compared to the present day (“For we which now behold these present days”), as both past and present can observe the beauty (“Have eyes to wonder”) but not successfully write about it (“lack tongues to praise”). The lyrical voice refers to his/her own inability to express and to talk about the young man’s beauty. Notice that, throughout the sonnet, the lyrical voice uses straightforward language in order to accentuate the meaning of his/her words, which is the inability to refer to the young man’s beauty in his/her writings

About William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was baptized in 1564 and died in 1616. He was an English poet, playwright, and actor. He is known as the greatest writer of the English language and as the most exceptional dramatist of all times. Moreover, William Shakespeare is often referred to as England’s National Poet, and his works include 38 plays, 154 sonnets, 2 long poems, and other texts and collaborations. Between 1585 and 1592, William Shakespeare started a successful career in London as an actor and writer. Also, he was a part-owner of a company called Lord Chamberlain’s Men. During those years, Shakespeare wrote most of his famous work. His first plays were mostly comedies, but his later works were tragedies, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, as his most remarkable plays. William Shakespeare wrote tragedies until 1608, and, after that, he wrote tragicomedies and collaborations with other writers. In 1613, when he was 49 years of age, William Shakespeare retired to Stratford. He died three years later in 1616.Most of his plays were published during his lifetime. However, they were printed in a variety of qualities and with several variations. Nevertheless, in 1623, John Heminges and Henry Condell, who were Shakespeare’s friends and colleagues, published a more precise text known as the First Folio. The First Folio is a collected edition of Shakespeare’s dramatic works that includes most of the plays recognized as written by Shakespeare. It has a preface with a poem written by Ben Jonson.

The Man in Asbestos by Stephen Leacock

The Man in Asbestos by Stephen Leacock.

 Summary

The Canadian author Stephen Leacock's "The Man in Asbestos, An Allegory of the Future" is a story about a modern man who wakes up in the future to find the world to be completely ruled by man and machines.  The characters in this story are the narrator and a man in asbestos. The man in Asbestos is the title character. He is the man whom the narrator meets in the future world. He is wearing an asbestos suit because it is very durable and is good for all seasons. He explains the various achievements of the future world to the narrator. He also compares each of their advancements with that of the narrator’s age.

The Asbestos man takes the narrator out of the museum to the Broadway. There the narrator finds human figures moving to and fro with ‘hairless faces’ and ‘asbestos suits.’ There were no vehicles. The place was soundless. The Asbestos man then describes the features of the new world one by one. At first he shocks the narrator by saying that they have ‘eliminated death’ from this world. Apart from death they have also eliminated disease, food and work. He points out that “disease and death were simply a matter of germs.” They found them one by one and destroyed them. The only fear that they had was the fear of getting ‘broken’ either through accident or by some other means. To avoid such accidents they have banned “all street cars, street traffic, aeroplanes and so on.” So the people of the future world could live forever.
Then he proudly states that they have conquered nature. He calls it the “Great Conquest of Nature.” It is the final victory of man and machines. Chemical Food came first. Agriculture and natural food ceased. In the future world, instead of eating food, the people took a concentrated pill every year. That was all that was needed. They used the digestive apparatus for other uses such as filling it with education. There was no fashion in the world of the Asbestos man. They used ‘Asbestos Clothes.’ In one year humanity made clothes to last forever. The conquest of nature also meant that there was no more work. All the work was done by machines. People had no work at all in the future world.
Next they killed the changes of the climate. They changed the composition of the sea. As a result the sky was cloudless and grey in colour. There was no telegraph, telephone or transportation. The people of the future world regarded all this as useless. When work stopped and commerce ended, and food was needless and the weather killed, it was foolish to move about. Education was acquired through a surgery, so it was known as “surgical education.” It was a simple operation which was done by opening the side of the skull and engrafting into it a piece of prepared brain. Moreover there was no newspaper as there was no war, death or accident. The men and women had similar appearance with ‘hairless faces’ and ‘ageless looks.’ The asbestos man also mentions that he has not heard the word ‘children’ for at least a century.
This shows that along with death they have also eliminated birth in the future world. In short, the world of the Asbestos man is a world in which in which life has lost all meaning and charm.
